For they loved the praise of others rather than the praise of God. (John 12: 43)

We live in a society today where we find it more and more difficult to trust or believe the words of the people around us. It was not so long ago that I recall my father conducting business based on a handshake. It was a time when honor among people could be assured through that ancient gesture. People would often exchange great plots of land with little more than a verbal agreement and a handshake to seal the exchange.

In today’s world we find ourselves bombarded with insincerity, promises on the news and from politicians, offers in the mail that are too good to be true, and we are faced with a society that is skeptical about everything that is placed in front of it. This is totally in contrast to what we know of the Word of God. It is the same yesterday, today and will be tomorrow. It is truth! The Word of God is something we can depend on and something we know that will not change. We know that the promise of salvation and an eternity with God are promised and are awaiting all who accept Jesus Christ.

As we reflect on the transient gods of the material world that far too many of us worship, many of us wonder how we could be so blind. We each need to ask, “What idols am I worshiping today? Money? Computers? Other People? Drugs or alcohol?” These false idols come and go. They are elusive and unfulfilling. It is comforting to know that the God of Truth will remain the same today, tomorrow and forever.

God of unchanging steadfastness, may You be the only “Idol” that we turn to each day!
