I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. (Isaiah 49:6)

My fourth grade teacher, Mr. Fanhauser, was a wonderful man. He taught me in public school on Monday through Friday, and on Sunday in church school. I remember how gentle and strong he was. He showed us how to live lives full of love and yet not be weak, an invaluable lesson for a nine-year-old boy.

Today I can recall only one specific thing this teacher said, a quote that stood out then and now: “Every day you live, you affect the life of someone else.”

Throughout my life, this creed has proven to be true. What my fourth grade teacher did not say, but implied, I came to learn: we seldom understand the lasting impact we have on the people around us.

Sometimes it feels like we labor in vain, spending our strength and energy for nothing. But when we keep Jesus Christ at the center of our lives, others will see the source of our strength and energy. Jesus’ light and warmth can be felt by those around us, even when we don’t realize it. I reflect on how Mr. Fanhauser’s light shone into my life and I give thanks. I want to be the kind of living witness to others that he was to me.

Thank You, Holy Creator, for Your greatest gift of all, Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to live our lives daily so that others will find the same love we have found!
