We communicate with other people not only through speech, but in ways that are very diverse. Body language is a big thing when we are cruising for a date, a one-night stand or just companionship.

Years ago, the comedy team of Laurel and Hardy were great personal friends. The wife of Mr. Hardy tells of a tender moment when the quality of their friendship was expressed. Hardy had suffered a stroke and could no longer speak, but Laurel, when he came to visit, used body language and signs to communicate with his friend, something they had done for years in the making of comedy movies. Their acquired skills of pantomime served them well in sealing their bond of friendship.

Is there such a thing as “Spiritual sign language?” I believe that God spoke to us in this way through the words and actions of Jesus Christ. The Savior not only spoke of new ministry and love through parables, but taught us through his walk and actions. His supreme communication of love was expressed as He took the sins of humanity to a wooden cross and dispensed with them forever. Through His death, the signal was sent that our sins disappear into a sea of forgetfulness.

God of Love and Mercy, may the language of our bodies send a message of love and compassion to those around us.
