The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” (1 Samuel 3: 10)

One night while the young boy, Samuel, was serving Eli in the Tabernacle at Shiloh, God called Samuel’s name three times. Each time Samuel thought it was Eli calling and hurried to the old man’s side. Finally, Eli told Samuel, “Go back and if the voice calls again, say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” Samuel did as he was told. God then revealed to the young boy things that were going to happen in the near future. God gave Samuel a miraculous calling as a prophet—a call to anoint, and even rebuke, kings!

But God could not reveal any of these truths to Samuel until the lad responded, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.” This brings us to a very important question for today’s living. Does God speak today?

Many of us complain that “God never speaks!” But a more worthwhile and pointed question might be, “How many people today are listening?” Scripture tells us that the Spirit of God is like a still, small voice. In the world today the noise of human nature simply living out life is a loud and disturbing sound throughout the universe. God is most probably more anxious to speak to us today than ever.

Is it that God doesn’t speak or is it that humanity does not listen? God does speak! God constantly speaks. If we quiet our lives and listen we will hear truths that are most remarkable and at a time when divine providence is more needed than ever before. Listen for the still, small voice.

Holy Creator, may our ears be turned away from the noise and bustle of the busy world of today and may we hear clearly and distinctly, the still small voice of Your calling.
